NPFL champions and Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent Rivers United have been drawn into Group B for the 2022-23 CAF Confederation Cup. The Pride of Rivers become the first Nigerian side to feature on the continent since Enyimba in 2021.
Rivers United dropped into the CAF Confederation Cup playoffs after failing to go past reigning champions Wydad Casablanca in their Champions League playoffs. The Nigerian champions proceeded to pummel Libya’s Al Nasr Benghazi 6-1 over two legs to qualify for the group stage of this year’s CAF Confederation Cup.
Rivers United have been drawn into Group B alongside Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas, Congo’s Diables Noirs and DR Congo’s DC Motema Pembe. They will face each other over two legs, and the top two teams will progress to the quarterfinals.
The NPFL champions are back in Africa’s second-tier club competition after a seven-year hiatus. They will face an ASEC Mimosas side that overcame Sporting Club de Gagnoa, a DC Motema Pembe side that overcame Flambeau Du Centre and a Diables Noirs side that overcame La Passe FC, in their respective playoffs.
